Ross Sea: An arm of the South Pacific in Ross Dependency, Antarctica, ending at about 78° in the Ross Ice Shelf or Ross Barrier, a permanent layer of ice (50-200 feet high) ending in mountains at about 85° south.

OBS

The "Ross Barrier" is the front wall of the glacier on which actually ends the south side of the Ross Sea, while the "Ross Ice Shelf" is all the floating "iceberg" extending at the back of the ice cliff.

On appelle plus particulièrement «barrière de Ross», parfois «banquise de Ross» la falaise de glace formant le mur frontal du glacier, et «plate-forme flottante de Ross», toute l'étendue de glace, partie de la calotte glaciaire antarctique, qui occupe la partie méridionale de la mer de Ross et la ferme à la navigation.
